Bhalla | If your incisional hernia has recurred after open surgery and you are now considering laparoscopic surgery, this can be a good decision—as per doctors, laparoscopic repair of recurrent incisional hernia is often safer, less painful, and faster to recover from compared to repeat open surgery. Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive procedure where small incisions are made, and a camera and surgical instruments are inserted to repair the hernia using a mesh. For recurrent incisional hernias, this technique allows the surgeon to avoid scarred tissue from the previous open surgery, which reduces the risk of complications such as infection and bleeding. Benefits of laparoscopic surgery for recurrent hernia include: Smaller incisions and reduced postoperative pain Shorter hospital stay (often just 1–2 days) Faster return to normal activities Lower risk of wound-related complications Better cosmetic results However, not all patients are ideal candidates for laparoscopic repair. Factors like your general health, obesity, size and location of the hernia, and presence of intestinal adhesions may affect the surgical approach. A CT scan may be advised by your doctor to better understand the hernia's size and contents before surgery. Your doctor may also suggest placing a large mesh inside the abdominal wall during laparoscopy to reinforce the weak area and prevent another recurrence. This method, known as IPOM (Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh) technique, is commonly used in laparoscopic hernia repairs. You should choose an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and discuss the risks, type of mesh, recovery time, and precautions after surgery. Following surgery, it’s crucial to avoid heavy lifting, maintain a healthy weight, and manage chronic cough or constipation to prevent future recurrence. |
