I have inguinal hernia. The doctor has advised me to undergo surgery. Is laparoscopy suitable for my condition? What are the risks and benefits of laparoscopy surgery?

If you have an inguinal hernia and your doctor has advised surgery, laparoscopic surgery can be a good and modern option in many cases.

Laparoscopic hernia surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which small incisions (about 0.5 to 1 cm) are made in the abdomen. A thin tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted, and the hernia is repaired using mesh.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery:

Less pain after surgery compared to open surgery.

Faster recovery – most patients can return to normal work within 1–2 weeks.

Smaller scars – better cosmetic results.

Lower infection risk due to smaller cuts.

Both sides repaired at once – if you have hernias on both sides, they can be treated in the same surgery.

Risks of Laparoscopic Surgery:

General anesthesia is required.

Slight risk of bleeding, infection, or injury to nearby organs like the bladder or intestines.

In some cases, the surgery may need to be converted to open surgery.

Hernia recurrence, although rare, is still a possibility.

If your overall health is good and your hernia is not very large or strangulated, laparoscopic surgery is a safe and effective option. It is especially useful if you want a quicker recovery or have hernias on both sides. However, if you have had multiple abdominal surgeries or other medical conditions, open surgery might be better.
