I have a problem of piles. Will it be cured with medicine or will I have to undergo surgery? If surgery is to be done, what precautions should be taken? |

Piles (also called hemorrhoids) are swollen veins in the rectum or anus, and they can cause pain, itching, bleeding, or discomfort, especially during bowel movements. Whether they can be treated with medicines or require surgery depends on the severity of the condition. Mild to Moderate Piles: If your piles are in the early stage (Grade 1 or 2), they can often be managed without surgery: Medicines: Doctors usually prescribe creams, ointments, or suppositories to reduce swelling and relieve pain or itching. Stool softeners or mild laxatives may be advised to avoid straining. Lifestyle changes: High-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), plenty of water (8–10 glasses a day), and regular exercise help prevent constipation and reduce pressure on rectal veins. Severe Piles (Grade 3 or 4): If you have large, painful piles that do not improve with medicines or keep coming back, the doctor may suggest surgical treatment: Minimally invasive procedures: Rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or infrared coagulation. Surgical options: Hemorrhoidectomy or Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy, usually for severe or long-standing cases. Precautions After Surgery: Take prescribed pain medicines and stool softeners. Eat soft, high-fiber food to prevent constipation. Avoid heavy lifting or straining during bowel movements. Keep the anal area clean and dry. Follow all post-operative care instructions from your doctor. Conclusion: Start with medicines and lifestyle changes if your condition is not advanced. If it does not improve or is severe, surgery may be needed. Always consult a proctologist or general surgeon to decide the best treatment for your specific condition. Early treatment gives better results and avoids complications. |
