If you have been suffering from epilepsy for the last 6 years and have been taking medicines regularly but have not found relief, it is important to consult a neurologist for a detailed evaluation. Some important points and suggestions as per doctor: Re-Evaluation of Diagnosis Sometimes, people are misdiagnosed with epilepsy. A repeat EEG (electroencephalogram) and MRI brain may be needed to confirm the type of epilepsy and rule out any structural brain issues. Change of Medication If your seizures are not controlled despite regular medication, your doctor may consider: Changing to a different anti-epileptic drug (AED). Using combination therapy (two or more AEDs). Checking blood levels of your medicine to ensure proper dosage. Drug-Resistant Epilepsy If your seizures are not controlled with two or more medications tried at proper doses, it may be called drug-resistant epilepsy. In such cases, you may be referred to an epilepsy surgery center for further treatment options like: Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) Epilepsy surgery (like focal resection if seizures come from one part of the brain) Lifestyle and Safety Avoid triggers like lack of sleep, stress, alcohol, and flashing lights. Take medicines on time daily. Wear a medical alert ID. Avoid risky activities like swimming alone or working at heights. Ketogenic Diet Some patients, especially those with drug-resistant epilepsy, benefit from a ketogenic diet, under supervision of a doctor and dietician. |
