Constipation is a major trigger for hemorrhoids due to excessive straining during bowel movements. To break this cycle, it's essential to treat constipation first. Dietary Changes: High-fiber diet is the cornerstone. Include whole grains (brown rice, oats), green leafy vegetables, fruits (papaya, guava, apples with skin), and legumes. Aim for 25-30 grams of fiber per day. Drink plenty of water, at least 8–10 glasses daily, as fiber works best when accompanied by fluid. Avoid processed foods, red meat, and excess caffeine or alcohol, as they can worsen constipation. Regular Bowel Routine: Never ignore the urge to defecate. Set a fixed time daily, preferably after a meal, to develop a regular habit. Avoid prolonged sitting on the toilet, which increases pressure on the anal veins. Physical Activity: Regular exercise like walking, yoga, or light jogging improves bowel movement and reduces pressure in the rectal area. Home Remedies: Isabgol (psyllium husk) at bedtime with warm water or milk can soften stools. Triphala powder, taken at night, helps regulate digestion. Castor oil (1 tsp occasionally) may help in stubborn constipation but use under medical supervision. Medical Treatment: If dietary measures fail, doctors may suggest mild stool softeners or laxatives like lactulose or polyethylene glycol. For recurring hemorrhoids, use topical creams, warm sitz baths, and consult a proctologist for advanced treatments. |
