Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common concern, especially among women, and can lead to kidney problems if not properly managed. According to doctors, if you are experiencing UTIs more than twice in six months or three times in a year, further investigation is necessary to identify the underlying cause.

First, your doctor may recommend a urine culture to identify the specific bacteria causing the infection and choose the most effective antibiotic. Ultrasound, CT scan, or cystoscopy may also be advised to detect any structural abnormalities in the urinary tract, kidney stones, bladder issues, or other conditions like vesicoureteral reflux.

Some common causes of recurrent UTIs include incomplete bladder emptying, poor personal hygiene, hormonal changes (especially after menopause), diabetes, or use of a catheter. In men, prostate enlargement can also be a contributing factor.

For treatment, doctors often prescribe a full course of targeted antibiotics based on the culture report. In some cases, a low-dose, long-term antibiotic may be prescribed as a preventive measure. Postmenopausal women may benefit from topical estrogen therapy.

Preventive measures also play a vital role. Doctors suggest:

Drinking plenty of fluids (at least 2–3 liters per day).

Urinating frequently and not holding urine.

Wiping front to back after using the toilet.

Urinating after se-xual intercourse.

Avoiding irritating feminine products.

If there are anatomical or functional issues like a stone or obstruction, surgery or other interventions may be required. For persistent or complex cases, referral to a urologist or nephrologist is recommended for specialized care.
