An enlarged prostate is a common condition in men as they grow older. It is also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancer, but it can cause problems in passing urine. Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate: Frequent urination, especially at night Weak urine stream Difficulty starting or stopping urination Feeling that the bladder is not fully empty What You Should Do: Visit a Urologist: First, get a proper check-up done. The doctor may advise a physical exam, urine test, blood test (PSA), or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and rule out prostate cancer. Lifestyle Changes: Avoid drinking too much water before bedtime. Limit tea, coffee, and alcohol – these increase urination. Avoid holding urine for too long. Do regular walking or mild exercise. Medicines: Doctors usually start with medicines that help relax the prostate and bladder muscles (like Tamsulosin), or medicines to shrink the prostate (Finasteride, Dutasteride). These are effective for many people. Surgery (if needed): If medicines do not help or symptoms become severe, surgery may be needed. The most common is TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), which removes part of the prostate to improve urine flow. Important Advice: Do not take any over-the-counter medicine without asking your doctor. Regular follow-ups are important. If you have fever, blood in urine, or can’t pass urine – go to the hospital immediately. |
