I want to have surgery for weight loss. How will the surgery affect any of my existing health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure? |

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, can have a positive impact on many health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. According to doctors, losing excess weight through surgery can lead to major improvements in your overall health, especially if you have conditions linked to obesity. If you have type 2 diabetes, weight loss surgery can help lower your blood sugar levels. Many patients see a big improvement within days or weeks after the surgery, even before they lose a lot of weight. Some people are even able to stop taking diabetes medicines completely after some time, under doctor supervision. For high blood pressure, losing weight reduces the pressure on your heart and blood vessels. After surgery, many patients see their blood pressure go down and may need fewer medicines. In some cases, blood pressure becomes normal without medication. However, surgery is not a quick fix. You will need to follow a strict diet, exercise regularly, and attend follow-up appointments. Your doctor will carefully check your current health, including heart and kidney function, before recommending surgery. They may also adjust your medications after surgery to avoid low blood sugar or low blood pressure. In some rare cases, surgery can cause changes in how your body absorbs nutrients or medicines, so regular blood tests are important. It’s also important to take vitamins as advised by your doctor to avoid deficiencies. Overall, if you follow your doctor’s advice, bariatric surgery can not only help with weight loss but also improve or even reverse chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Make sure to discuss all your health conditions with your doctor before surgery, so they can plan the safest and most effective treatment for you. |
