Yes, bacterial vaginosis (BV) can affect both fertility and pregnancy if not treated properly. BV is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. It is not a se-xually transmitted infection, but s-exual activity can increase the risk. Impact on Fertility: BV can make it harder to get pregnant, especially if it spreads to the upper reproductive organs and causes pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can damage the fallopian tubes and make it difficult for an egg to meet the sperm, which reduces the chances of pregnancy. Also, untreated BV may affect the environment in the uterus, making it less suitable for a fertilized egg to implant. Impact on Pregnancy: If you become pregnant while having untreated BV, it may lead to several complications. These include: Preterm birth (giving birth too early) Low birth weight baby Miscarriage in some cases Infection after delivery, especially after a cesarean section or abortion |
