Inguinal hernia surgery is a common and generally safe procedure, especially when done by an experienced surgeon. At 45 years old, if you are otherwise healthy, your risk from this surgery is low. However, like any surgery, there are some risks involved. The possible risks include: Infection at the site of surgery Bleeding during or after surgery Pain or discomfort in the groin area after the surgery Swelling or bruising Numbness due to nerve irritation Hernia recurrence, although this is rare with modern techniques Mesh-related complications, such as rejection, infection, or long-term pain (rare) There are two main types of hernia surgery: open surgery and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Your doctor will choose the best option based on your condition and medical history. About Mesh: In most cases, surgeons use a surgical mesh to strengthen the weak area and reduce the risk of the hernia coming back. The most common type is a synthetic mesh, usually made from polypropylene, which is a type of plastic material. This mesh stays in the body permanently and gets covered by your tissue over time. There are also absorbable meshes, which dissolve after some months. These are less commonly used for inguinal hernias because they may not provide long-term support. The choice of mesh depends on: Your age and health The size and type of hernia The surgeon’s preference and experience Before the surgery, talk to your doctor about: What type of mesh they plan to use Why they recommend it Any possible risks in your case With proper care, most people recover well from inguinal hernia surgery and return to normal activities within a few weeks. |
