I need to have gallbladder surgery and I am 5 months pregnant. Should I go ahead with the surgery or wait until after delivery? Please advise.

This is a sensitive situation. Gallbladder surgery (usually laparoscopic cholecystectomy) can be safely done during pregnancy, especially in the second trimester (4–6 months), if the symptoms are severe—like intense pain, infection, or complications such as gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) or pancreatitis.

However, if the symptoms are mild or manageable, doctors may prefer to delay surgery until after delivery to avoid any potential risk to the baby.

You should consult both your gynecologist and surgeon together so they can decide what’s safest based on:

Your exact condition (pain, infection, gallstone size, etc.)

The baby's growth and health

Risks of delaying surgery
