If a patient reports that the anus has remained open and they cannot hold gas after a traumatic anal intercourse episode, it may indicate injury or weakening of the anal sphincter muscles. The anal sphincter normally maintains closure, and bleeding during the first episode suggests that there may have been a tear or stretching of the tissues. When the sphincter muscles are partially damaged, symptoms such as difficulty controlling gas can occur even if stool control is still preserved. The best step is to consult a colorectal surgeon or a specialist in anorectal disorders for a proper examination. Tests such as anal manometry or endoanal ultrasound may be used to evaluate the sphincter muscles. In many cases, pelvic floor physiotherapy and guided exercises can help strengthen the muscles more effectively than doing exercises alone. If there is a structural injury to the sphincter, minor surgical repair procedures may also be considered. Early medical evaluation is important so that the condition can be treated appropriately and long-term problems can be prevented. |
