For pilonidal cyst surgery, the choice of procedure depends on the size, severity, recurrence, and your healing capacity. As per your condition, your doctor may suggest one of the following surgical options:

Incision and Drainage (I&D): This is the simplest procedure, usually done under local anesthesia. The cyst is opened, pus is drained, and the wound is cleaned. It provides quick relief but has a higher chance of recurrence.

Excision with Open Healing: The cyst and surrounding infected tissue are surgically removed, and the wound is left open to heal naturally. This method has a lower recurrence rate but requires regular dressing changes and a longer healing time.

Excision with Primary Closure: The cyst is removed, and the wound is stitched closed. Healing is faster, but there is a slightly higher risk of recurrence compared to open healing.

Minimally Invasive/Laser Surgery: This uses a small incision and laser to remove the cyst and sinus tracts. It offers minimal pain, quick recovery, and good cosmetic results but may not be suitable for all cases.

Risks of Pilonidal Cyst Surgery:
Like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks:

Infection: The surgical site may get infected, requiring antibiotics or drainage.

Recurrence: The cyst can return, especially if not all tracts are removed.

Delayed Healing: Open wounds may take weeks to months to heal.

Scarring: Surgical scars vary depending on the technique used.

Bleeding or Fluid Collection: Rarely, additional intervention may be needed.

Your doctor will decide the most suitable method based on examination and history. Following strict hygiene, avoiding prolonged sitting, and keeping the area hair-free post-surgery can greatly reduce the risk of recurrence.
