I am having multiple stone in my Gallbladder. Doctor suggest Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. What exactly is laparoscopic gallbladder stone removal surgery? How is this procedure different from open surgery?

Laparoscopic gallbladder stone removal surgery, medically called Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove the gallbladder when it contains stones (gallstones) that cause pain, infection, or other complications. In this surgery, instead of making one large incision as in open surgery, the surgeon makes 3–4 small incisions in your abdomen. Through these tiny openings, a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) and special surgical instruments are inserted. The camera projects a magnified image of the internal organs onto a screen, allowing the surgeon to work with precision. The gallbladder is then carefully detached and removed through one of the small incisions.

In open cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes a larger cut (about 5–7 inches) in the abdomen to directly access the gallbladder. While effective, open surgery usually requires more recovery time, causes more postoperative pain, and leaves a larger scar.

On the other hand, laparoscopic surgery has several advantages:

Smaller incisions, which means less visible scarring.

Less postoperative pain.

Shorter hospital stay (often same day or 1–2 days).

Faster recovery, allowing you to return to normal activities sooner (within 1–2 weeks in most cases).

Lower risk of wound infection and other complications.

However, laparoscopic surgery may not be suitable in certain cases, such as severe infection, extensive scar tissue from previous surgeries, or complications that arise during the procedure. In rare cases, the surgeon may need to switch from laparoscopic to open surgery for safety reasons.

Overall, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the gold standard for gallbladder removal and is a safe, effective, and widely performed procedure worldwide when done by an experienced surgeon. Following your doctor’s pre- and post-operative instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery.
