What options do I have for treating ovarian cysts? Does it involve the use of medications, surgery, or other medical procedures?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within an ovary. Most ovarian cysts are harmless (functional cysts) and resolve on their own without treatment. However, treatment options depend on the type, size, and symptoms of the cyst, as well as your age and reproductive goals.

Watchful Waiting:
If the cyst is small (less than 5 cm), asymptomatic, and appears benign on ultrasound, your doctor may suggest watchful waiting. This involves periodic ultrasounds (every 6–12 weeks) to monitor the cyst.

Medications:
Hormonal birth control pills may be prescribed to prevent the formation of new cysts in future cycles, especially if you develop them frequently. However, they won’t shrink an existing cyst. Pain relievers like NSAIDs may be given to manage discomfort.

3. Surgical Options:
Surgery may be recommended if the cyst is:

Persistent or increasing in size

Larger than 5–10 cm

Causing pain or pressure

Suspected to be cancerous

Complicated (e.g., twisted or ruptured)

Types of surgery:

Cystectomy: Removal of the cyst while preserving the ovary (preferred in younger women).

Oophorectomy: Removal of one or both ovaries, done when the ovary is severely damaged or cancer is suspected.

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is commonly used for benign cysts, while larger or complex cysts may require open surgery.

Additional Tests:
If cancer is suspected, your doctor may order tumor markers like CA-125 or recommend referral to a gynecologic oncologist.

Conclusion:
Always consult a gynecologist for personalized care. Most cysts are non-cancerous and treatable with conservative or minimally invasive approaches. Early diagnosis and regular monitoring are key to avoiding complications.
