I need to undergo a prostatectomy surgery. Can this surgery be done using the laparoscopic method? What precautions need to be taken after this surgery? |

Yes, prostatectomy surgery (removal of the prostate gland) can often be done using the laparoscopic method, also known as minimally invasive surgery. In this method, small cuts are made in the abdomen, and a tiny camera (laparoscope) is used to guide the surgeon. It causes less pain, less blood loss, and faster recovery compared to open surgery. Sometimes, robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is also used, which offers more precision. However, not everyone is a candidate for laparoscopic prostatectomy. It depends on your overall health, size of the prostate, and cancer stage (if it's for prostate cancer). Your doctor will guide you on the best method based on your case. Precautions After Laparoscopic Prostatectomy: Rest and Recovery Take rest for at least 2–4 weeks. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities. Walk regularly to prevent blood clots. Wound Care Keep the surgical area clean and dry. Follow your doctor’s instructions about changing dressings. Catheter Care A catheter may be placed to help drain urine for 1–2 weeks. Follow hygiene tips to avoid infection. Inform your doctor if there is pain, fever, or blood in urine. Diet and Fluids Eat light, fiber-rich food to avoid constipation. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush your system. Medications Take prescribed antibiotics and painkillers on time. Follow-Up Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor healing and check for complications. Emotional and S-exual Health Some men may experience urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction temporarily. These often improve with time or treatment. |
