I am suffering from PCOD, I have not had periods for the last 3 years. I recently came to know about laparoscopic ovarian 'drilling' (LOD). Will this surgery help in regularizing my periods? |

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), also called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), is a hormonal disorder that affects many women. One of the common symptoms is irregular or absent periods due to lack of ovulation. Since you haven’t had periods for the last 3 years, it suggests that your ovulation is significantly affected. Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (LOD) is a surgical treatment that may help in such cases. It is a minimally invasive procedure in which small holes are made in the ovaries using laser or heat. This helps reduce the levels of male hormones (androgens) in the ovaries and can improve ovulation. How LOD helps: It can help restore ovulation in women who do not respond to medication like clomiphene citrate or letrozole. After LOD, many women start having more regular periods. It may increase the chances of natural conception if infertility is a concern. Points to consider: LOD is usually considered when other non-surgical treatments (like lifestyle changes or fertility medications) do not work. The effects of LOD are not permanent. Some women may benefit for several months to a couple of years. As with any surgery, there are risks like damage to the ovaries or formation of scar tissue. Yes, laparoscopic ovarian drilling may help in regularizing your periods if your PCOD is not responding to medicines. However, it is not the first-line treatment. Talk to your gynecologist to evaluate your hormone levels, ultrasound findings, and overall health. A complete assessment is needed before deciding on surgery. Sometimes, weight loss, exercise, and medication alone can restore your periods without needing surgery. |
