I need to undergo gallbladder surgery and I am 3 months pregnant. Should I undergo the surgery or should I wait for delivery? Please tell me.

Undergoing gallbladder surgery during pregnancy is a serious decision and must be taken carefully. Since you are 3 months pregnant (first trimester), it is important to consider both your and your baby’s safety.

Gallbladder problems during pregnancy:
Sometimes, gallstones or gallbladder infections (cholecystitis) can cause severe pain, vomiting, fever, or even complications. If these symptoms are very serious or don’t improve with medicines, doctors may suggest surgery.

Is surgery safe in pregnancy?
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery (minimally invasive) can be done safely during pregnancy, especially in the second trimester (4th to 6th month). This is considered the safest time for surgery, as the baby is more stable and the risk of miscarriage or preterm labor is lower.

What should you do now?

If your symptoms are mild and can be managed with diet and medicine, your doctor may ask you to wait until after delivery.

If you are having constant pain, vomiting, infection, or complications like blocked bile ducts, surgery may be necessary even during pregnancy to protect you and your baby.

Always follow your gynecologist's and surgeon’s advice. They will work together to decide what is safest.

Tips for managing symptoms until surgery (if delayed):

Eat low-fat food

Avoid fried and spicy food

Eat small frequent meals

Stay hydrated
