Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside the ovary. Most women develop cysts at some point in their life, and many of them are harmless and go away on their own. Types of ovarian cysts: Functional cysts – the most common type. These form during your menstrual cycle and usually disappear within a few months. There are two main types: Follicular cysts Corpus luteum cysts Dermoid cysts – made up of tissues like hair, skin, or teeth. They are usually not cancerous but may need surgery. Endometriomas – caused by endometriosis, when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. Cystadenomas – grow on the surface of an ovary and may be filled with watery or mucous-like fluid. Polycystic ovaries (PCOS) – ovaries contain many small cysts due to hormone imbalance. Causes: Hormonal changes Endometriosis Pregnancy Severe pelvic infections Previous ovarian cysts Symptoms: Most cysts are silent, with no symptoms. Some may cause pain in the lower belly, bloating, irregular periods, or trouble urinating. Diagnosis: Your doctor may use: Ultrasound Blood tests Laparoscopy (a minor surgery to look inside) Treatment Options: Watch and wait: Many cysts go away by themselves. Medication: Birth control pills may prevent new cysts. Surgery: If the cyst is large, painful, or suspicious for cancer, surgery may be needed (laparoscopy or laparotomy). |
