If your wife’s period is delayed by 25–26 days and the ultrasound shows no pregnancy but a cyst of 22 × 24 mm (about 2.2 to 2.4 cm), it is likely to be a functional ovarian cyst. These cysts are common and usually form during a woman's menstrual cycle. In most cases, these small cysts are not dangerous and go away on their own within 1 to 3 months without surgery. They are usually filled with fluid and are not cancerous. The delay in periods could be caused by hormonal imbalance due to the cyst. What to do next: Wait and watch: Doctors often suggest waiting for one or two menstrual cycles. The cyst may shrink or disappear on its own. Medication: Sometimes, doctors prescribe hormonal tablets (like birth control pills) to help regulate periods and prevent new cysts from forming. Follow-up scan: Your doctor may ask for another ultrasound after 6–8 weeks to check if the cyst has reduced or gone. Surgery only if needed: Surgery is usually considered only if: The cyst grows larger than 5 cm It causes severe pain It does not go away in a few months There are signs of complications (like twisting or rupture) |
